Autism Diet

Because autism is striking so many people these days, there has been an upsurge of interest in how to help those that are suffering. Although there is no known cure for the disease, and the cause is questionable, there are some things that you can do that have been shown to help those that are suffering. One of these things is keeping your child on the autism diet in an attempt to lessen the effects of the disease. Here is some information about the autism diet and how easy it is to follow.

Gluten and Casein are the two things that really need to be avoided with the autism diet. That is how simple the diet really is. In fact, it is thought that those with autism are unable to digest these proteins properly and that they may actually act as a drug in their body. Because of the fact that they are acting almost like an opiate in their system, they can affect an autistic child or adult and cause their symptoms to become worse. So it is really a matter of staying clear of these particular proteins in the diet and here is how that is done.

Gluten is a protein that is found in grains, especially wheat. It can also be found in other grains, such as barley and rye. Other offending foods could include vinegar, artificial colors and soy sauce. Check with your doctor for a more complete list of foods to avoid. Casein proteins are commonly found in milk and milk bi-products, such as cheese, butter and ice cream. Avoiding these foods and any other foods which contain casein and gluten should help to lessen the effects of the disease that are caused by problems with the protein.

Although there are some studies that show that the autism diet can help individuals that are suffering from the disease, not all of the studies that have been done are conclusive. It is best if you ask your doctor to run some tests to see if your autistic child is able to process these proteins effectively. In that way you will be able to make an informed decision on what to do about the autism diet.
